There are many reasons why we all need to learn to get along with people and socialize. All this can be translated to the need for development of the social self. Many of us cringe inside when we are forced to interact with others and this can display itself in nervousness and discomfort. There are many reasons that we may feel this way but most commonly if it is a continuous problem there has been something missing in our lives in terms of social development.

By nature we are all supposed to be social animals and when we regress from this it is manifested in other areas of our lives. We become unfulfilled and are lonely. We cannot interact on the job or in relationships and eventually become socially isolated. This can lead to anxiety and depression and other serious mental illnesses. If you were in possession of the social skills necessary for meeting new people and the like then you would not be at this disadvantage.

If you experience these problems then you will have to start the stages towards the development of your social self and become comfortable interacting with others. If you desire to progress in your career and in your relationships social skills are vital and the learning environment should start immediately. The longer you put off confronting the problem of your social development the harder it will be to resolve this situation. It is a good thing that you do not have to be young to learn social skills and that they can be adopted at any stage in life. It is true that it is harder to learn the older we get and the more set in our ways but it is not impossible.

Perhaps the largest and most important of these stages is the ability to stay in a relaxed frame of mind and maintain a low level of anxiety when in the social environment. The process of relaxing is often the hardest to achieve but it enables all the other stages to follow quickly. If we are too nervous we will not be able to function in a way that is suitable for the social setting. We are unable to listen and speak as effectively as we should and this puts us at a severe disadvantage.

Nervousness also many times is manifested physically and as a result your body and face can send the message that you are nervous to others. This can influence some persons to try to make you more comfortable but often most people will be unwilling to build a rapport with you, as they believe that they are making you uncomfortable. If you are able to relax this will serve you well in the social setting and you will be on your way towards the development of your social self.

We can tackle relaxing from several viewpoints but it is important to start with your self-image. If you do not have good feelings about yourself it is the case that you will also expect others not to like you as well. This is the anxiety that often comes out in the social setting. It is vital to start liking yourself and then you will find that relaxing will come easier. Introspection into your self-image is a good place to start on the road towards the development of social self. Become happier with yourself and you will find that you can relax with people and that your relationships will improve as well. Go online and explore the new age solutions in guided relaxation if you need additional support.
