A healthy relationship with other people involves healthy social and positive social life. Socializing is an element of relationship that bridge communication gaps, cultural and individual differences. Friendly relationship is very different from familiar relationship. On the other hand, some people can make friends easily while others need to make an effort. There are also some people whom we dislike on sight and we do not want to make friends with them. While others we immediately like even before they are introduced to us. We are sometimes prejudiced regarding some people, even before we meet them. Sometimes, insecurity also drives us to be a little bit difficult to make friends to.

The initial step to making friends is getting rid of the prejudices that may deprive us from developing lasting friendships. Know yourself first. Know your preferences, your prejudices and make a self-analysis if these preferences are helping you the most in your social life. You may have some of these preferences that may be unhealthy for your personal and professional relationships that you need to consider in changing your style in most ways, especially if the changes will help you improve your relationship with others. Consider that prejudice is more often harmful than helpful to people as it most of the time biased and may bring about unfair treatment to other people.

It is true that hesitation and prejudices cannot be hidden. Take heart because it is one of the normal behaviors common to everybody. However, if we feel insecure when meeting people for the first time, we create a first impression of ourselves that conveys a certain detachment or aloofness. The new people we meet do not usually see the insecurity but they do see the detachment. Realizing this effect would help us understand ourselves better and strategize on how we can improve our way of dealing the next time. Try first to establish rapport, build a short term goals in making friends and improve relationships. That way, you can establish the relationship you are aiming for and improve your current relationships.

Another thing to remember when making new friends is to give them a chance to show you who they really are. Talking to a new friend can help you discover topics that you are both familiar with. Sooner or later, you could reach a topic in which either both of you know or you are interested in and he knows a lot about. Making friends in the office is makes your working environment more pleasant and more comfortable. Having friends instead of enemies to work with can promote better working relationships with co-workers and it also boosts productivity. A harmonious working environment is a great place to be.

When meeting new officemates, keep and open mind and try to be accommodating to the unfamiliarity and unease that he or she may feel at first. Help ease away the uncomfortable feeling by taking the newcomer around and introducing him or her to the other co-workers. Try to make the newbie comfortable and welcome. It would also help a lot if co-workers avoid backbiting and backstabbing of other office mates. It makes for an uncomfortable working environment if the co-workers do not like each other and are constantly at each other’s throats. This is sometimes the effect of having envy for other co-workers and gossiping too much about them.

There are some offices that really foster a competitive atmosphere to make their employees more alert and more productive. Competition makes each employee want to outdo the other and it makes for better work and more work completed. In fast paced offices, workers do not even need the employers go signal to be competitive. Sometimes, people are just more competitive than others. In situations like these, it is best to bear in mind that work is work and social life is another thing entirely. While working, competition is abundant but in the social arena, you can still be friends with competitive co-workers.
